The buying decision
Shortlist Semrush if keyword research, technical diagnosis and monitoring all feed a regular publishing or SEO process. Its breadth is harder to justify for occasional copywriting or a single article. Decide which reports will change next month's work before choosing a bundle; a large data allowance alone does not create an actionable strategy.

Visit official websiteSemrush combines keyword research, competitor investigation, technical site auditing and ongoing rank tracking. Its current pricing page separates an SEO package from bundles that also include AI search visibility. That breadth is useful when the problem is deciding where to invest across a site, rather than generating the next article. [1]
Our assessment favors it for teams with several connected research tasks and someone who can act on the findings. A solo publisher buying it only for a monthly keyword list should compare the recurring commitment with a more focused research process. We have researched the documented workflow, not measured ranking improvements or tested a paid account.
On 10 September 2026, the public pricing page displayed SEO at $139/month, Starter at $199/month, Pro+ at $299/month and Advanced at $549/month for monthly billing. Annual options displayed lower monthly equivalents; those are annual commitments, not month-to-month cancellation offers. Treat these as dated public listings and confirm currency, tax, selected toolkit and checkout total before payment. No account-specific quote has been verified. [1]
SEO and Starter each list five monitored websites and 500 tracked keywords. Pro+ increases those to 15 and 1,500; Advanced to 40 and 5,000. Starter also lists an AI visibility allowance. Choose by the work that exhausts first, including locations and devices, rather than the biggest headline number. [1][4]
Some knowledge-base articles still describe Pro, Guru and Business SEO Toolkit tiers. Do not map their limits automatically onto the current SEO, Starter, Pro+ and Advanced storefront names. Ask the merchant to confirm the particular entitlement when the documentation and proposed purchase use different names. [1][3][4]

A detailed, source-based assessment of Semrush: workflow, plan limits, alternatives and buying considerations.
6 min read · Source-based editorial analysis. Suitability judgments are not hands-on test results.
Consider a small software publication with existing reviews, several categories and limited editing time. Its next decision could be to repair an inaccessible category, consolidate overlapping articles or cover a genuinely different reader question. Writing more words does not resolve that choice. Semrush is relevant when research needs to inform these competing priorities.
We would define a monthly deliverable before subscribing: a short list of changes, the evidence behind each one and the person responsible. For every proposed article, identify the audience, search intent and what original material the publication can add. If the workflow ends at exporting a large spreadsheet, the subscription has not yet earned its role. This is our evaluation framework, not a claim about a customer's achieved results.
Semrush describes search volume as a monthly average based on the preceding twelve months and explains that national or local database selection changes the result. Its methodology uses modeled data; volume is not a count of visits to your own website. [2]
For a seasonal topic, an annual average can hide the month when demand actually matters. Record the market and observation date alongside a keyword before comparing it with another. Separate three questions: do people search for the topic, can this publication answer it well, and does that audience have a plausible reason to buy? The first does not establish the other two.
A missing local estimate should remain a gap. Semrush's help distinguishes insufficient data from low volume and explains that changing the location can change availability. Expanding the geography can help investigate a topic, but it should not quietly change the intended audience in the final business case. [5]
The audit configuration supports a domain, subdomain or subfolder scope. The scope and page allowance determine which parts of a site enter the investigation. [3]
Start with a site you control and list the templates that matter: directory, product, review and comparison pages, for example. A crawl that reaches only one section cannot establish the condition of the entire publication. Review representative reported URLs before changing code. Decide whether a finding affects discovery, rendering, navigation or an optional improvement, then assign a concrete repair and a way to verify it.
We would not use a rising vendor health score as the acceptance criterion by itself. A repaired link should open the intended page; a previously inaccessible review should render useful content. That connects a diagnostic tool to visitor experience and prevents the audit from becoming a recurring report that nobody uses.
Position Tracking documents location, device and engine targeting. It also explains that repeated keywords across different targets consume the overall keyword allowance. [4]
Create a small stable baseline tied to real landing pages and annotate substantial site changes. Avoid changing geography simply to obtain a more attractive report. A movement after an edit is an observation, not proof that the edit alone caused it; competitors, search systems and seasonality can also change.
For an agency, specify the target definition in the client report and keep it consistent from month to month. For a publisher, pair visibility observations with its own consent-aware analytics and actual business records. The purchasing decision should rest on whether this process improves prioritization, not a promise that owning the software produces rankings.
Our existing Surfer review focuses on preparing and revising an individual content brief. Compare that workflow if your team already knows what to publish and needs an editing environment. Semrush's broader investigation is a different purchasing job; buying both makes sense only when each has an owner and a distinct output.
Compare Writesonic when producing and revising content is central to the evaluation. If the immediate task is understanding your own existing pages, first write down what your current reporting already answers. Add paid research when it fills a specific missing decision. We have not run a same-task benchmark establishing a winner among these products.
The cancellation guide separates subscription cancellation from add-on removal and warns that active add-ons can carry into an upgrade. It also describes a limited retention period for paid monitoring data after cancellation. Export the reports and decisions you need before changing the subscription. [6]
The same guide excludes ordinary monthly subscriptions and renewals from its standard seven-day guarantee; eligible initial annual commitments or add-ons have additional conditions. Cancellation is not an automatic refund request, and signed agreements can differ. Check the applicable terms rather than relying on a generic money-back badge. [6]
For procurement, keep a list of the subscribed toolkit, optional components, renewal dates and internal owner. If an evaluation ends, preserve its conclusions outside the account so the useful work survives the software decision.
Use one site you control, a known technical issue and three genuinely different content questions. Ask the evaluator to produce a prioritized brief with a target market, supporting observations, unresolved gaps and one feasible next action per question. Record the time spent investigating and preparing that brief; do not invent a time-saving percentage.
Repeat one observation with the same target settings to check that a colleague can understand the method. The proposed acceptance test is whether the team can explain a better next decision and complete a repair, not whether a dashboard looks impressive. This exercise has not been run by this publication. If it does not improve your process, postpone the broader subscription.

No such result is established by this research. Treat demand metrics and ranking observations as inputs to a decision, then evaluate outcomes using your own evidence.
Do not assume that mapping. The current storefront and some help articles use different tier names; confirm the entitlement attached to the exact offer. [1][3][4]
You can evaluate that use case, but compare the recurring cost with the limited work required. Our assessment favors a recurring multi-stage research process.
No. The official guide treats them separately, with conditions and exclusions for refunds. Review the terms applicable to your purchase. [6]
