The buying decision

Is Synthesia a good fit?

Consider Synthesia for recurring scripted communication where consistency and revisability matter more than filming a person on location. Evaluate the real delivery workflow and credit consumption first. If your main requirement is paid advertising with stock or synthetic avatars, the documented licensing restriction is a decisive reason to reconsider that use.

What to know about Synthesia

Synthesia documents turning a script or source document into scenes with an AI presenter and editable narration. Its central buying use case is a repeatable explanation: onboarding, a process update or a training module that must be revised and localized. That is different from filming a real event or demonstrating a physical product in use. [1]

We would shortlist it when a team owns the script and needs a consistent delivery format. The decision depends on the final export, the revision cycle and rights for the chosen avatar. We have not tested presenter realism, translation accuracy or completion time in a paid account.

The public page checked on 10 September 2026 displayed Starter at $29/month and Creator at $89/month for monthly billing, with separate annual offers and a custom Enterprise quote. These are dated storefront observations; confirm checkout currency, tax, entitlements and renewal terms for your account. The page distinguishes one editor from invited guests, so a guest allowance should not be budgeted as multiple authoring seats. [2]

The self-serve help guide lists 1,200 monthly credits for Starter and 3,600 for Creator, shared across usage-based features. At its documented rate of two credits per generated video second, these represent ten or thirty minutes only if that entire pool is used for that video activity. They are not additional independent allowances on top of dubbing or asset generation. Annual balances are specified separately; do not assume twelve monthly resets. [3]

Build a production budget around the final delivery, including revisions and languages. Keep room for rework. The upgrade or annual-discount decision should follow a representative delivery exercise, not precede it.

Who is it for?

  • Training teams producing recurring explanations from approved scripts.
  • Businesses updating repeatable onboarding and internal communication.
  • Teams with a reviewer for wording, pronunciation and each target language.

Consider another option if

  • You need paid promotional use of stock or synthetic avatars.
  • The deliverable depends on footage of a real physical demonstration.
  • You expect guest access to replace multiple editing seats or credits to be unlimited.

Strengths

  • A scene-based script can make the scope of a future update easier to plan.
  • Documented credit rules support a more realistic revision budget.
  • A repeatable presenter format is relevant to standardized internal explanations.

Limitations

  • Stock and synthetic avatar licensing excludes paid promotion.
  • Shared generation credits require budgeting across activities and revisions.
  • A convincing presenter does not establish that the underlying explanation is accurate.

Synthesia Review: Plans, Limits & Practical Fit (2026)

Synthesia: in-depth review

7 min read · Source-based editorial analysis. Suitability judgments are not hands-on test results.

How this review was researched

Based on official product pages and documentation checked on 10 September 2026. Documented capabilities are attributed to the vendor; suitability, strengths and tradeoffs are editorial analysis. We have not purchased a plan or conducted hands-on benchmarks. No numerical rating, measured performance result or account-specific commercial permission is asserted.

A good candidate: a process that changes, but stays scripted

Imagine a company explaining how to submit an internal request. The useful deliverable contains a clear introduction, a screen demonstration and an approved next step. A repeatable presenter could give these elements a consistent frame, while the script remains the source of truth. We would evaluate Synthesia for that kind of communication rather than assume every business video needs an avatar.

The initial task is to simplify the explanation. Decide what the viewer must understand and remove material that does not help that outcome. A long policy document is not automatically a good video script. This preparation belongs in the project budget even if the generation step is convenient. No production-time reduction has been measured in this review.

From source material to a reviewable video

The vendor describes importing source material, creating scenes and editing the result. [1] For a practical evaluation, keep the approved original next to the proposed script and trace each important statement. Split a multi-step instruction into scenes whose purpose is clear. Use real authorized screen captures when the viewer needs to recognize an interface; an attractive generated visual can still be the wrong evidence.

A reviewer should inspect captions, spoken wording, timing and the final next step together. Give one person responsibility for approving the message and another for checking the exported delivery context if the audience uses a learning system. We are proposing this workflow; we have not uploaded a customer's documents or verified an integration in a live account.

Why the second version matters as much as the first

Synthesia's edit guide distinguishes changes that add newly generated duration from changes that do not. New or replacement words can consume additional credits; replacing an avatar or changing a voice language can also affect consumption. Its examples treat some punctuation and framing changes differently. [4]

This makes a precise revision brief valuable. Approve names, dates and terminology before generating a long module, then record which change caused additional usage during evaluation. A two-minute final video can require more production allowance than its final duration suggests, especially when the presentation changes late.

Do not estimate cost by counting only exported minutes or by assuming every edit regenerates the entire video. Use the actual usage dashboard for the intended revision. A reliable purchasing comparison should include that second version, because maintenance is part of the recurring training use case.

Use one production budget for the whole job

The self-serve documentation describes a common credit pool for video and other generation features and says unused credits do not accumulate across billing periods. [3]

As an illustrative calculation, three ninety-second videos would require 540 credits at two credits per second, before chargeable revisions or other usage. This is arithmetic using a documented rate, not a measured account result or a promise about every generation mode. A dubbing step or generated asset should be accounted for using its own current rate.

Budget by delivery project: source-language scenes, localized versions, necessary assets and an explicit revision reserve. Track the assumptions separately so a reviewer can see why the nominal ten-minute allowance may or may not suit the month. If demand is irregular, compare billing commitments and expiry before assuming an annual offer is better value.

Check avatar rights before producing an advertisement

The licensing guide checked for this review prohibits paid promotion using stock or synthetic avatars and voices. Its examples include paid social, YouTube and programmatic advertising. For custom avatars, the guide instead refers to the agreement and informed consent of the represented person, alongside moderation rules. [5]

The practical decision is to settle the intended distribution before production. A training video on a company site and a paid campaign are different briefs. Do not finish a stock-avatar advertisement and only then investigate its rights. A custom avatar is not a blanket clearance for every claim, script or distribution channel.

The personal-avatar setup guide documents a consent recording from the person represented. [6] Allow time for that person and the approving team to understand the intended use. These product-content rules are also separate from this publication's affiliate advertising agreement; a permission in one does not authorize the other.

Localization and alternatives: choose by the actual deliverable

For localization, give a fluent reviewer the approved meaning, terminology and audience context. Ask them to flag changes in meaning as well as pronunciation. A natural-sounding voice can make a mistranslation less obvious to someone who does not understand the language. We have not independently assessed the language quality of Synthesia or its alternatives.

Compare HeyGen using the same script, avatar rights, export destination and revision request. Consider InVideo AI when the brief is led by assembled visuals and narration rather than a consistent presenter. Film the real activity when physical evidence, a genuine interview or a live demonstration is central. The choice follows the communication job; this research does not establish a universal video-quality winner.

A short evaluation with a meaningful acceptance decision

Prepare a sixty-to-ninety-second onboarding script with one difficult product name, one authorized screenshot and a clear next step. Define the delivery format before generation. After the first version, replace one sentence and ask a reviewer to verify whether the change is correct everywhere it appears, including captions.

Record the starting and ending credit balance, the specific operations performed and any remaining manual editing. Review the exported video at the size and sound conditions the audience will use. If localization is required, repeat the review with a fluent speaker rather than scoring the voice by sound alone.

Pass only if the viewer can follow the instruction, the revision is correct and the content rights match the planned distribution. This is a proposed evaluation, not a completed test. Download or preserve the approved deliverable and source script before changing the subscription; confirm retention and export entitlements with the merchant.

Common questions

Can stock avatars be used in paid ads?

The official licensing guide prohibits paid promotion with stock or synthetic avatars and voices. Custom-avatar use has separate consent and agreement conditions. [5]

Are video minutes and dubbing allowances separate pools?

The self-serve guide describes shared credits across usage-based features. Different activities have different consumption rates, so do not add their maximum allowances together. [3]

Does every small edit cost the entire video again?

The edit guide describes different consumption rules for script, avatar and voice changes. Inspect the actual operation and usage rather than assuming a universal charge. [4]

Has Atlas tested Synthesia's realism or translations?

No. This review is source-based research with an original evaluation brief. It does not claim a hands-on benchmark, numeric quality score or tested time saving.
